Join Latino Outdoors NYC and Downtown Boathouse for a special kayaking session on Governor's Island!
ABOUT
We’re so excited to partner with Downtown Boathouse for a free, community kayaking session at Governor’s Island! We’ll meet up the ferry port for a free ride to the island, where we’ll learn the basics of paddling and water safety!
Downtown Boathouse is the world’s largest free kayaking program–with public access to ports on Pier 26 and Governor’s Island. They offer New Yorkers and visitors alike the opportunity to safely get out on the water, learn about our coastal ecosystems, and experience the Concrete Jungle in a unique way!
No previous kayaking experience is necessary, but you must know how to swim. Children 12 or younger share a double kayak with their guardian and anyone 13+ years are welcome to paddle alone in a single kayak.
RSVP and participation is free but pre-registration is required to attend!

WAVIERS
In order to particpate, you must register via Eventbrite AND complete the following waivers (we will have physical copies available to sign on the ferry ride over).
SCHEDULE
- 9am: Arrive at the port and meet up with the group at the entrance to receive your ferry ticket
- 9:15am: Board ferry
- 9:25am: Ferry dock closes and ferry departs (we have zero control over this, so please arrive on time!)
- 10am: Group intros, kayak instructions, enjoy your time on the water
- 12pm: Group closing circle and event ends. Feel free to enjoy Governor’s Island at your leisure (the last ferry departs at 11pm).
PACKING
- Wear clothing that you’re comfortable getting wet in (tee shirt and shorts)–you will get wet below the waist. Downtown Boathouse provides free lockers, locks, and changing areas so you can store your belongings while you paddle.
- Sunglasses and hat that won’t blow off with the wind.
- Sunblock
- 2L full water bottle
- Sandals that can get wet (optional as many people paddle barefoot)
- Waterproof cell pouch (optional for those who’d like to bring their phones out while paddling)
- Please pack an extra outfit to change into and a towel for afterwards. There’s an outdoor shower if you need to rinse off after kayaking.
