A Guide to Writing Your Yo Cuento Blog Post

Would you like to join the varied voices united in celebrating diversity in the outdoors?  If so, consider contributing your story for possible publication in the Latino Outdoors blog.  Please use this guide to support your writing process.  Each person who contributes a thoughtful and relevant story will receive a special gift of appreciation from Latino Outdoors.

Topics/Prompts/Ideas to get you started

  • Write about any topic that fits under the general themes of:
    • Equitable access to the outdoors (recreation, conservation, environmental education, etc.)
    • Better representation of the diverse people and communities that play and engage with the outdoors
    • Expanding the definition of “outdoor engagement” to be more inclusive of the often-overlooked ways in which people from different communities connect with the outside world
    • Simply tell your own story of connection to the outdoors; feel free to be as open about your personal perspective and lived experience as you’d like to be.
    • Some topic prompts are:
      • What inspired your love or connection to the outdoors?
      • What does outdoor recreation or engagement look like for you?
      • Why is it important to foster an outdoors that is welcoming of diverse groups of people?
      • What has been a barrier (real or perceived) that challenged your access to the outdoors?

Criteria

  • There are no upper or lower word limits, but to give you a sense of length, our blog posts tend to range from 600 to 800 words.
  • Short paragraphs and concise language help the reader remain engaged in your story.

What to include with your blog post

  • A title and photos
  • Optional: A short (up to 100 words) author bio
