About LO’s ICE Encounter Protocols
As immigration enforcement evolves, so will our Vamos Outdoors safety measures and precautions. While LO leaders are not experts on immigration rights, we are prepared to follow widely accepted Know Your Rights guidelines. Additionally, all LO leaders have access to real-time legal guidance during roadside interactions, such as traffic stops, and other encounters with law enforcement to help de-escalate interactions, safeguard civil rights, and support safety. That said, it is important to recognize that we cannot guarantee safety from or interfere with immigration enforcement.
Recommendations for Participants
- LO asks participants not to share pictures/stories/posts with real-time location information on social media accounts (e.g., “Here we are at site 7 in XZY campground.”).
- If we encounter law enforcement at a LO outing and they question us about immigration status, please use your right to remain silent and do not answer. Our unified silence will help prevent anyone from being targeted and ensure the safety of the entire group.
- If you are concerned about attending an event due to fears of encountering immigration enforcement, contact us at info@latinooutdoors.org for guidance and support. Your well-being is our priority.
- Add your local Rapid Response Hotline number to your cell phone contacts for easy access.
- Discuss with your family how you will respond to a detainment using available resources and templates to guide you.
