Friends of Alemany Farm stewards the largest and most productive agricultural space in San Francisco. The 3.5 acre site is located on the border of the Excelsior and Bernal Heights neighborhoods, adjacent to the 280 freeway. Our mission is to grow free fruits and vegetables with and for low-income, historically oppressed communities and provide food system education. Together we sow the seeds of food security, food sovereignty, and food justice in the southeast region of the city.

We are seeking to hire apprentices for the year-long Alemany Grows Urban Agroecology Apprenticeship program. This role is part-time and temporary for San Franciscans, aged 18 and older, who are interested in

  1. growing healthy, delicious foods for your loved ones & community
  2. learning, teaching, and practicing regenerative and sustainable agriculture in an urban environment
  3. creating a more equitable and ecologically vibrant food system in San Francisco

Apprentices will work alongside Alemany Farm Managers and support all aspects of food production and community engagement at the farm. This position will include hands-on training in ecological agricultural best practices from seed to harvest including:

  • greenhouse propagation
  • irrigation
  • bed preparation and soil fertility management
  • weeding
  • pest and disease control
  • harvest, post-harvest handling, and distribution
  • fruit tree care
  • leadership training and volunteer management

We will also dedicate time to understanding regenerative urban agriculture in the context of contemporary and historical justice movements, and as a tool for building community resilience in the era of climate chaos.

Schedule: Work will take place outdoors at Alemany Farm.

10-16 hours a week beginning mid July 2026
Mondays 12:30 pm – 5 pm,
Wednesdays/Fridays 9am -3pm

The program is 12 months

Work hours will be reduced during winter holiday breaks and inclement weather (such as heavy rain or smokey air).

Candidates must be:

  • Invested in working with and empowering people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Capable of working outside in varying weather conditions
  • Comfortable working collaboratively in groups and independently
  • Able to lift 30 pounds, perform repetitive physical tasks, bend, kneel, shovel soil, push a wheelbarrow, and be on their feet for long periods of time
  • Interested in gardening, farming, and food production

Compensation:

$23.50 per hour
this is a part time position
