These campaigns help Latino Outdoors and our partners expand equitable access to the outdoors, nurture new outdoor leadership, and diversify the collective narrative around people’s relationship to the outdoors.
First Day Hikes | January 1st
A tradition started by America’s State Parks system to kick off the New Year by experiencing the outdoors with the local community, these outings are always held on New Year’s Day (January 1st) and include various recreational activities (hikes, walks, runs, etc.).
Latino Advocacy Week | TBA
Latino Advocacy Week is hosted by the Hispanic Access Foundation. It’s a week where Latino communities and organizations are supported through virtual workshops and webinars for their growth as community advocates.
Semillitas Outdoors | April 25th-May 3rd
Latino Outdoors’ weeklong celebration of Latine children in the outdoors includes regional outings/events, virtual speaker panels, and at-home resources that center the experience of Latinx children and their families. National Park Week | April 18th-26th
National Park Week is a nine-day celebration of all things related to the National Parks system. This celebration is always kicked off with free entrance to any of National Parks and includes activities for ages!
Earth Day | April 22nd
Earth Day is a day to remember the importance of taking care of the planet and all it gives us. Latino Outdoors chapters across the country create events that encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to engage in activities that are eco-conscious and apply Leave No Trace principles.
City Nature Challenge | April 24th-27th
Created and organized by Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences, the City Nature Challenge is a global, four-day event that involves observing and documenting biodiversity within urban environments. Participants use smartphones and other digital tools to record and idenfity living organisms, contributing valuable data to science. The challenge promotes community science, environmental awareness, and encourages communities to engage with and appreciate the natural world, even within urban landscapes. Celebrate Trails Day | April 25th
Hosted on the fourth Saturday of April, Celebrate Trails Day is an annual spring celebration of America’s trails. Started by Rails-to-Trails Conservancy in 2013, the celebration encourages people across the country to get outside and enjoy the nation’s exceptional trails and trail systems.
Kids to Parks Day | May 16th
Kids to Parks Day is an annual initiative by the National Park Trust to connect kids and families to explore and experience nearby parks. Celebrated on the third Saturday of May, this initiative encourages physical activity, connection with nature, and fosters a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. National Parks provide organized events such as guided nature walks, picnics, games, and other family-friendly activities.
Orgullosamente Outdoors | June 1st-30th
At Latino Outdoors, we celebrate pride all year long. In June however, we go big for Pride Month in celebration of 2SLGBTQ+ Pride, love, history, and joy. Includes virtual conversations and regional Pride-themed outdoor experiences.
Latino Conservation Week | TBA
Latino Conservation Week is an annual initiative by the Hispanic Access Foundation that aims to engage and celebrate the Latino community’s connection to the outdoors, natural spaces, and environmental conservation. As a key partner of this week-long event, LO provides regional outings/events and national-level virtual engagements. The goal is to promote awareness, appreciation, and participation of Latinos in outdoor and environmental activities, while also emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship.
Latinx Heritage Month | September 15th-October 15th
Latinx Heritage Month is an annual, month-long celebration of the contributions and influence of Hispanic/Latine Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the United States. Throughout Latine Heritage Month, LO participates/plans various events, educational programs, and cultural activities that highlight the diversity of Latin American cultures, histories, and achievements.
National Public Lands Day | September 26th
A signature event of the National Environmental Education Foundation, National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. Typically takes place on the fourth Saturday in September. Individuals and community groups across the country participate in various environmental stewardship activities such as trail maintenance, cleanups, tree planting, and educational programs. The goal of this day is to encourage people to connect with and contribute to the preservation and improvement of public lands.
#OptOutside | November 27th
A campaign by REI to help create an outdoors for everyone. Also an opportunity to choose to spend the day outdoors over the consumer-driven tradition of #BlackFriday shopping. Latino Outdoors leaders host outings and events in their local communities. For more information, check out the official #OptOutside website.
Day of Giving | December 1st
National Day of Giving encourages giving back. It takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
