Maintenance Worker (Trails)

These position is located in Joshua Tree National Park, in the Facility Division.

Duties

These positions are Career-Seasonal positions and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal positions includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty (August) status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Joshua Tree National Park is November – May but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

DUTIES:

Performs trails maintenance duties such as:

• Maintain trails to standard by cleaning water bars, removing excess rock on tread, brushing, cutting trail edge berm, digging dip drains and clears trail of trees, obstacles and debris.
• Laying out and constructing new trail in rocky, mountainous terrain, and in performing landscape restoration of abandoned trails.
• Removing windfalls, felling trees, and utilizing block, tackle, and winches for moving and placing heavy objects
• Construct water bars, retaining bars, causeway, dry/wet rock retaining wall and rip-rap.
  Routinely assist trail leaders in supervising crew members in the concepts and techniques of trail work and back country living ethics.
