Description

Under direct supervision, to perform a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, and manual tasks for the development, maintenance, and preservation of County Parks and Recreation facilities, amenities, and open space areas.

Typical Tasks 

The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  • Assists higher level employees with a variety of semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work of facilities, amenities, and open space areas, including rough carpentry, basic plumbing, painting, basic electrical, and/or masonry;
  • Assists higher level employees with basic landscaping and vegetation management, including planting, watering, pruning, trimming, fertilizing, removing, transplanting, and cultivating plants, trees, and other vegetation in accordance with departmental standards;
  • Performs litter clean-up, refuse control, and general cleaning of park structures, buildings, and amenities, including but not limited to open space areas, restrooms, picnic areas, historic sites, camping areas, trails, and recreation areas;
  • Operates pickups, stake and dump trucks, a variety of hand and power tools, lawn mowers, and other similar park equipment;
  • Creates, maintains, and tracks paper and electronic records;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required*;
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

Employment Standards 

Sufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks, plus the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate before completion of the probationary period.
  • Completion of OSHA Confined Space Entry Training when assigned to work in a permitted confined space.
  • Must successfully complete a Live Scan background investigation and maintain clearance throughout the term of employment.
  • Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
  • *As a condition of employment, pursuant to California Government Code Sections 3100-3109 and Local Ordinance, all County of Santa Clara employees are designated Disaster Service Workers (DSWs), including extra help. A DSW is required to complete all assigned DSW-related training, and in the event of an emergency, return to work as ordered.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic grounds-keeping techniques, such as planting, mowing, watering, pruning, and fertilizing;
  • The safe and proper operation of vehicles, hand and power tools, and related equipment;
  • Principles and practices of customer service;
  • Common computer systems and applications.

Ability to:   

  • Perform a variety of unskilled and manual tasks;
  • Perform moderately heavy manual labor;
  • Safely and effectively operate related tools and equipment;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, at all levels, including colleagues, the public, and representatives of other agencies;
  • Work collaboratively with those contacted in the course of work on a variety of cross-functional departmental initiatives in order to achieve department goals;
  • Utilize specialized departmental computer programs and systems, including but not limited to maintenance and asset management software and timekeeping programs;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Physical Requirements 

  • Work under the following conditions using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE): dust, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, cramped quarters, confined spaces, and inadequate lighting;
  • Climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, work overhead, and grasp;
  • Lift, push, and pull up to sixty (60) pounds;
  • Work outside in remote settings and variable temperatures and weather conditions;
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, special events, and other irregular hours;
  • Must conform to departmental uniform standards.
